[A "list of names" was given through which the particular chain has passed from its inception; for example, the initial letter was written:]

General Gale to General Harbord
General Harboard to General Mead
General Mead to Col. Burnham

[etc. up to the 44th]

Copy this and send it to nine (9) people to whom you wish good luck. The Chain was started by an American officer and should go around the world three times. Do not break the chain for whoever does will have bad luck. Do it within 24 hours and count nine days and you will have some good luck.
Let's all go selling through 1924.

Published: The Eagle (Bryan, Texas), 10 May 1924, p. 2.  Title: "Wanton Extravagance of Chain Letter is Demonstrated in an Article Written by Royal E. Cook of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania." "In this morning's mail I received a letter bearing the caption 'Among others' and in this letter a 'list of names' was given through which the particular chain has passed from its inception;"  Sic "selling" but it could be a transcription error by the newspaper. "General Gale" could be a corruption of "Colonel Cole", which also could be a corruption [1923].  Entered by DWV, Feb. 23, 2014.
