Advocacy chain letter. Anti-war. American Neutrality
League. Partial transcript. US, 1940.
[In a letter which suggests recipients
copy and send to Congressmen, newspaper and magazine editors, secretaries
of patriotic and civic organizations and friends, the league's committee
of correspondence urges Americans to ...]
" maintain a sincere neutrality as a nation, regardless of our personal
sympathies as individuals.
If we follow this policy we need not fear the ill will of any nation abroad
and we need not become hysterical over any impossible direct invasion of
the United States. An adequate defense has not been provided for that will
permit us to assist in cooperation with the governments of the Western Hemisphere
against any possible indirect invasion.
You have not only the right but the duty to register your opinion and to
take a definite stand against the warmongers, many of whom are in high places
of authority. They are the real fifth column power - whatever that means
in America - influencing public opinion against the best interests of our
homes and firesides.
